When asked whether even smaller logistics companies can successfully operate sustainably, experts and specialist media in Baden-Württemberg and beyond like to refer to Alpensped.
And not without reason: for more than two decades, our entrepreneurial thinking and actions have been characterised by commitment to our customers, high-quality logistics services and a responsible approach to the environment and people. This is what we understand sustainability to be. In concrete terms, this means: we consistently work every day according to our N3 philosophy. N3 stands for economy, ecology and social. We consciously place these three dimensions of sustainability at the centre of everything we do.
Over the past quarter of a century, we have grown from a small transport company to a medium-sized, specialised logistics service provider with process-oriented transport handling. Today, our business partners include over 150 customers and more than 30 freight carriers bound by contract. However, growth at any price was and is not an option for Alpensped. Our goal has always been healthy economic development. This is why we ensure sustainable management, taking our N3 concept into consideration. But how can we tap new countries, markets and customers sustainably?
Our answer to this is: organic growth, a healthy industry mix, highly qualified employees and certified quality. All this creates the basis for sustainable economic development at Alpensped. For us, a sustainable economy also includes excellent creditworthiness, which is certified by Creditreform. The globally recognised certificate is proof of our stable corporate situation and our very good payment practices.
Alpensped is a pioneer in the field of “green logistics”. This is evidenced not only by our certified environmental management system according to the ISO 14001:2004 standard and the climate-neutral organisation of our administration. We were also one of the first medium-sized freight forwarders to have our Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) certified for the entire company in accordance with ISO 14064. Likewise, our Transport Carbon Footprint (TCF) is certified according to DIN EN 16258. Since 2012, we have shown the specific TCF on all individual and collective invoices for each shipment carried out.
As a logistics company we offer transport services in 20 European countries. This service accounts for 99.77 percent of our CCF and corresponds to 17,527 tons of CO2-e. We therefore feel a particular responsibility to protect the environment. Our goal: we want to be climate neutral by 2025. We are taking a three-pronged approach – reducing, examining the transfer of lorry transport to rail, and offsetting. In the future, we also want to incorporate our customers and invite them to participate in the offsetting scheme and thus put more climate-friendly transport on the road.Alpensped offsets its CO2 emissions through a myclimate project in rural Tanzania, which supplies households with solar power. In 2017, we offset 1,250 tons of CO2, or just under 7.13 percent of the company’s total footprint, in this way.
On our “green path”, we are also committed to the sustainable use of resources, and communicate this – going over and above compliance with statutory environmental regulations. For example, we promote sustainable thinking and action on the part of our employees and encourage them to behave in an environmentally friendly way. In July 2013, we put a photovoltaic system into operation on the roof of our company building that covers around 60 percent of our own annual electricity requirements.
For us, social commitment is not a short-term cure, but an obligation. Whether it’s tutoring for young refugees, financial support for aid projects or employee-oriented HR policies – social responsibility for employees and society has always been an indispensable core element of our company philosophy.
We focus on our employees as the most important pillar of the company. This includes ensuring that company employees and business partners are not disadvantaged or favoured on the basis of their gender, nationality or religious affiliation. We also encourage and involve our employees to the best of our ability and opt for a cooperative management style.
Our wide-reaching charitable involvement also has a firm place in our corporate culture. And this goes far beyond financial support to aid organisations such as Doctors Without Borders. For example, our employees are released from their work from time to time to help out at Mannheim food bank.
In addition, we believe that we have a particular social responsibility in the youth sector. Alpensped therefore supports several sports clubs such as TSV Neckarau, Rhein-Neckar Löwen and SV Waldhof. Since June 2014, we have also been involved in the youth development programme “Anpfiff ins Leben” (kick-off into life), which integrates sport, school, work and social issues in a holistic way.
In 2017, we were awarded the Lea Medium-Sized Company Award for Social Responsibility for our voluntary social commitment by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing and by Caritas (Catholic relief services) and Diakonie (social welfare work).
