CLIMATE INITIATIVE 50/50: Supporting climate action projects together
Transport is associated with greenhouse gas emissions. Alpensped calculates transport-related emissions and reports them transparently. On this basis, our customers can voluntarily link their transport to the 50/50 Climate Initiative.
Under the 50/50 Climate Initiative, Alpensped and participating customers share the costs of supporting selected climate action projects.
For every calculated tonne of CO₂, Alpensped covers half the cost of CO₂ certificates. The other half is borne by the participating customers. The certificates purchased support selected climate action projects.
What does the climate action contribution mean for your transport?
The transport service itself remains unchanged. The resulting greenhouse gas emissions will continue to be calculated using the TCF methodology and reported separately.
The climate action contribution is an additional, voluntary form of funding for climate action projects. It does not replace the avoidance or reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, nor does it make a journey emission-free, climate-neutral or automatically climate-friendly.
Alpensped therefore treats transport emissions and project funding as separate matters and presents them transparently.
SUPPORTING CERTIFIED CLIMATE ACTION PROJECTS
Together with our partner First Climate, we are supporting the Gold Standard project ‘Uganda: energy-efficient cooking stoves’ through the purchase of CO₂ credits.
According to the project provider, the widespread use of efficient cooking stoves helps, amongst other things, to reduce wood consumption, curb deforestation, minimise smoke exposure in households and improve local living conditions.
The project details regarding emission reductions, project scope and additional social or environmental impacts are based on information provided by the project developer and the relevant certification documents.
YOUR VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTION
Would you like to link your transport with the 50/50 Climate Initiative?
Please feel free to contact us. We’ll be happy to provide you with information on how the voluntary climate action contribution is calculated and on the climate protection projects currently supported.
DEFINITIONS
What is a Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF)?
The Corporate Carbon Footprint, or CCF for short, describes a company’s greenhouse gas footprint. It includes both direct and indirect emissions resulting from business operations.
These may include, among other things, emissions from energy consumption, the vehicle fleet, business travel, purchased services and other relevant activities. Alpensped has its Corporate Carbon Footprint audited in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14064-1:2019.
What is a Transport Carbon Footprint (TCF)?
The Transport Carbon Footprint (TCF) describes the transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions of a shipment or transportation service.
The purpose of calculating the TCF is to track and report transportation emissions in a transparent manner and to make them more comparable. Alpensped has its Transport Carbon Footprint audited in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14083:2024.
How is the TCF calculated at Alpensped?
The TCF describes the calculated greenhouse gas emissions of a specific consignment in CO₂e.
The calculation is carried out in accordance with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 14083:2024. Depending on the mode of transport, relevant transport data is taken into account.
This includes, amongst other things:
- Load weight
- Transport distance
- Load capacity
- Proportion of empty runs
- Fuel consumption
- Conversion factors for determining greenhouse gas emissions
The transport-related greenhouse gas emissions are calculated from the relevant transport data. The calculation is integrated into our transport management system.
Emissions from the upstream supply chain of the fuel used are also taken into account, for example those arising from the supply of the fuel.
How does the voluntary climate action contribution using carbon credits work?
Through the 50/50 Climate Initiative, customers can voluntarily provide financial support for selected climate action projects.
CO₂ credits are purchased to fund these projects. These credits represent emission reductions that have been calculated and verified in accordance with the relevant project standards.
The financing of such climate action projects must be viewed separately from the actual greenhouse gas emissions generated by a specific transport operation. The purchase of CO₂ certificates does not prevent the emissions caused by the transport itself.
For this reason, transport emissions are still calculated and reported separately by Alpensped.
