    Infrastructure and road traffic

The 625,000 km long German road network is one of the densest in the world. There is a high level of traffic safety and a high rate of motorization.

The German motorway network is very well developed and in above-average condition. In a global comparison, Germany has the best infrastructure.

In freight transport, a route-dependent truck toll has been imposed for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes on motorways since 2018 (TollCollect).

Given its location in the centre of Europe and the large number of neighbouring countries, Germany plays a major role as a transit country. The country has a high traffic density and has the largest transport volume within the EU.

    Economy and foreign trade

Thanks to a GDP of € 3,449 b. (2019), Germany’s economy is the strongest in Europe and the fourth largest in the world. It belongs to the very highly developed countries and has a high standard of living and prosperity.

Germany is an export country and has always been the world export champion. In 2019, Germany exported goods worth € 1,330.2 b. and imported € 1,102.6 b. These are primarily machines and mechanical products, motor vehicles and parts as well as electronic products. The most important trading partners within Europe are France and the Netherlands.

The internationally renowned German automotive industry, with brands such as Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, makes a major contribution to economic output.
