Dobro Dojdovte!

Macedonia changed its name to North Macedonia in 2019 to differentiate itself from the Greek region of the same name.

Alpensped also serves this relationship and moves, among other things, plastic profiles, metal products and mechanical engineering products. Until Macedonia joins the EU, the organization of customs clearance is also part of our range of services.

Our know-how in the transportation service sector, our familiarity with the Balkans as well as our native-speaking employees make Alpensped a specialist for Southeastern Europe.

    Infrastructure and road traffic

The Macedonian road network measures 14,200 km, of which around 9,700 km are paved. The motorway network is not yet fully developed.

A route-dependent toll must be paid on the motorways. This is collected at the toll stations in cash or with a credit card, sometimes also electronically. Thanks to the new EU economic and investment plan for the Western Balkans, investments and the economy of the south-eastern European EU candidate countries are to be revived from 2021. In the main area of transport high investments are made in the local expansion of essential road transport axes.

    Economy and foreign trade

The Macedonian GDP was € 11.34 b. in 2019. The country is considered to be one of the weakest European economies. Exports of € 6.95 b. and imports of € 8.57 b. result in a high trade deficit as well as dependence on imports. This deficit is only minimized by foreign payments from Macedonians who have emigrated.

By far the most important export country for North Macedonia is Germany. The main import countries are Germany, Great Britain, Greece and Serbia. The main exports are chemical products, electronics, machines, iron and steel as well as clothing. The most important import goods include non-ferrous metals, electronics, petroleum products, textiles, iron and steel.

    Country and culture

North Macedonia is a landlocked country in south-eastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula. Its landscape is characterized by mountains, lakes and rivers (Blue Heart of Europe).

The Macedonian culture is very heterogeneous and distinctly different from region to region. Due to the many resident nations, on the one hand there is cultural diversity, on the other hand this often leads to disputes. The largest group in the population are the Albanians who live their own culture, which is why Albanian was introduced as a second language in Macedonia.
