Infrastructure and road traffic
Slovenia has a road network of 39,000 km in length, which is above average relative to its size. The infrastructure is also well developed. The motorway network is state-of-the-art and provides a connection between the commercial centres of Maribor, Ljubljana and Koper.
A vignette is required for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of less than 3.5 tonnes on the motorways and expressways, while a route-dependent toll is due for heavier vehicles. The toll is paid via a transponder (DarsGo Unit).
Due to its favourable geographical location between the west and the south-east resp. east of Europe as well as the well-developed transport sector, Slovenia is very suitable as a logistics hub in the heart of Europe. Therefore, Slovenia will certainly gain in importance as a logistics location in the future.
Economy and foreign trade
Slovenia is a young state that gained independence in 1991. Of all the countries of the former Yugoslavia, Slovenia is the wealthiest country and has built a strong economy.
The GDP in Slovenia amounted to € 48 b. in 2019. With € 40.1 b. in goods exports and € 39.3 b. in goods imports the trade balance is relatively balanced. Slovenia prefers to maintain trade relations with Germany and Italy. The main export goods include motor vehicles and parts, electronics, machines and pharmaceutical products. Imported goods are motor vehicles and parts, machines, mineral fuels, mineral oils and electronics.
Country and culture
Slovenia is located in Central Europe. The many lakes, rivers and even high alpine mountains are characteristic of its multifaceted, impressive landscape. Its lush forests which make up almost 60% of the country’s area are home to a wide variety of endemic plant species. Therefore it is obvious why about a third of the country is a conservation area.
Various cultural institutions and organizations of the highest standard are located in Slovenia. A rich cultural offer and many events enliven the cultural life. The population is fairly uniform, as the majority consists of Slovenes.
