Infrastructure and road traffic
The road network in Slovakia is 56,900 km long. While the motorway network is gradually being expanded, the highway network is already well developed.
There is a toll on the Slovakian motorways and expressways. Vehicles under 3.5 tons can pay this with the e-vignette, vehicles over 3.5 tons pay a route-dependent toll with the help of an on-board unit.
Slovakia is one of the most important transport destinations in the future, not only because of its central location within Europe and the high economic growth, but above all thanks to its strong automotive industry. There is still potential for development concerning an expansion of the infrastructure in the east of the country.
Economy and foreign trade
In 2019 Slovakia’s GDP totalled € 94 b. € 80.1 b. in exports and € 80.5 b. in imports result in a balanced foreign trade balance. The main trading partners of Slovakia are Germany and the Czech Republic. The main product groups in export and import include motor vehicles and parts, electronics and machines.
Slovakia is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in Europe. Since many foreign car manufacturers such as Volkswagen, Kia and Peugeot have relocated their production to Slovakia, the economy is in good shape. While the west of the country is thriving, the east of the country is a lot worse off.
Country and culture
Slovakia is a landlocked country in Central Europe and is one of the very highly developed countries. Its landscape is characterized by mountains such as the Carpathian Mountains, the Hungarian Plain and long rivers. There are also underground stalactite caves, some of which have been declared a World Heritage Site.
Slovak customs and traditions exist mainly in rural areas. Since folklore is popular, various folklore festivals are held. Some constructions are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The Hungarians are the largest minority in Slovakia.
