    Infrastructure and road traffic

The road network running from north to south has a length of 388,000 km, the motorway network of 3,500 km. The infrastructure and road safety are of the highest quality worldwide, the rate of motorization is high. The traffic routes also run from London as the country’s commercial centre. Left-hand traffic is a specialty of British road traffic.

In Great Britain, tolls are only compulsory on the M6 Toll motorway, on some bridges, in some tunnels and in the centres of a few cities. Payment can be made with a credit or debit card or with an electronic transmitter.

In the future, Great Britain will remain a relevant trading partner despite Brexit. The Channel Tunnel enables shipping to Great Britain by road with short transit times.

    Economy and foreign trade

In 2019, the UK had a GDP of € 2,525 b., making the country the second largest economy in Europe and one of the largest in the world.

The trade deficit between exports of € 796.7 b. and imports of € 826.3 b. is large. Within Europe, Germany, the Netherlands and France are among the most important trading partners. Decisive foreign trade products are chemical products, machines as well as motor vehicles and parts.

After a referendum by the British population, Great Britain left the EU on January 31, 2020 (Brexit), but is currently in a transition phase during which important details still need to be regulated. Apart from renewed tariffs and border controls, Brexit will also have economic consequences.

    Country and culture

Great Britain is an island state in Western Europe and consists of the federated entities England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Supplemented by Northern Ireland, it forms the United Kingdom. Several small archipelagos belong to Great Britain, which is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel, the Celtic Sea and the Irish Sea.

Great Britain’s diverse landscape is characterized by endless coastlines, cliffs, chalk and granite cliffs plus mountains. There are also forests, moors, rivers and some canals.

Due to the large number of former colonies, many different nationalities live in Great Britain. Conversely, British culture, especially the English language, has spread internationally in this way. From a linguistic point of view, there are independent languages and very different local dialects in each federal entity.
